QGIS Fast Track (conversion course)


Open Source and free-to-use products like QGIS can present a significant cost saving opportunity for organisations. A training session designed to help current users of commercial GIS software transfer their skills to QGIS – the Open Source desktop GIS package. The course is taught by means of tutor-led teaching and hands-on exercises.

Attending QGIS Fast Track entitles delegates to receive 4 CPD points towards their continual Professional Development under the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Chartered Geographer scheme.

This course is most suitable for:

  • Those with working knowledge of a commercial GIS product such as ArcGIS or MapInfo. Delegates should be using such products on a fairly regular basis and have a good understanding of GIS concepts and functions.

Module 1: QGIS Basics

  • Basic introduction to QGIS
  • Loading data
  • Querying data
  • Attribute tables
  • Vectors, rasters and project files

Module 2: Connecting to Networked Data

  • Adding in Web Mapping Service (WMS) & Web Feature Service (WFS) layers
  • Connecting to a PostGIS database (optional topic)

Module 3: Creating & Editing Data

  • Setting up and creating new datasets and data
  • Editing functions

Module 4: Printing

  • Print composer
  • Accessing templates

Module 5: Connecting to online services

  • Connecting to different types of open data and online services

Module 6: Geoprocessing & Analysis

  • Geoprocessing tools
  • Analytical tools
  • Looks at practical examples of applied GIS
  • Discussion about using QGIS in the workplace
